Transylvania had an unresting history. Conquered by the hungarians in the 8-9th century, part of the Otoman Empire after the battle from Mohacs, it ended as part of Habsburg empire till 1918.
We will visit more the middle and south part of Transylvania, mostly the part inhabited by the saxon and szeckler colonists. Here we enjoy the saxon culture but also their way of cooking, doing the wine, their way of living.
It will be a special trip by having contacts with the locals, understanding their way of living, understand the tragedy of this civilisation.
We will visit cities, villages, wineyards, citadels, different elements that describe as a whole this region of south and central Transylvania.
Day 1: Arrival in Sibiu.
Meeting with your guide. Transfer to your Hotel. After accommodation at the 3* Hotel, that was built in 1789, “Roman Emperor”, located in the heart of the city, we will have short city walking tour ended with dinner and wine tasting.
Before dinner the guide will held a short presentation of the journey and about Transylvania and its things to offer.
Day 2: Sibiu - Tirnaveni - Medias - Blaj and return
After breakfast we end our city tour started yesterday, and depart to Tirnaveni, short stop in Medias, and visit the city of Blaj, see the extraordinary greek catholic cathedral, the center of the greek-catholic church. We will have lunch in an old castle at Jidvei wineyard, and obviously we will enjoy a special winetasting. Jidvei is the most important vineyard for dry white wines, their famous brand being the "Riesling from Jidvei". Late afternoon return to Sibiu, free dinner.
Day 3: Sibiu - Biertan - Sighisoara - Viscri (Weisskirch) and back.
All day in the old saxon area ! This day will be a long one. On the way we will visit Biertan and after we drive directly to Viscri - Weisskirch - and we will have a special saxon type lunch. Here we will talk to the mayor who is a saxon lady and her mother. You will enjoy their dialect and also be amazed of what people can do if they want to and are well organized.
Also you will see what Prince Charles Foundation is doing in this region to save this civilisation. Be prepared for an exceptional plum brandy and local wines.
On the way back we will stop and visit Sighisoara, the only inhabited medieval citadel, the Rothenburg of Eastern Europe. Free dinner.
Day 4: Sibiu - Rosia - Agnethen - Cincu - Cirta - Sibiu
Saxon villages just wait to be visited, lunch posibility in Agnethen, one of the 7 "Sieben Burgen". We will stop and perhaps manage to have a chat with now a famous saxon writer in germany and not only, the lutheran priest Eginald Schlattner. Lunch in Agnethen or in Cincu at a local Restaurant. We will stop wherever will be possibile and try to visit several saxon fortfied churches, some of them even now in a good shape. In Cirta we visit the ruines of the Zisterzinsen nones. Free dinner.
Day 5: Sibiu and surroundings
Today we will complete our visit in Sibiu - cultural capital of Europe in 2007 -, than visit the biggest and well preserved village museum just outside from Sibiu, after we visit the basilica from Heltau where we will also have the chance to enjoy a saxon lunch. Afternoon free time for last shopping possibility and farewell dinner outside Sibiu at a Romanian family’s home, and again we will enjoy a wine tasting.
