Moldavia was an independent state in the Middle Ages.
In 1859 by free will the population voted the union with
Walachia and so the new Romanian state was born.
But the old capital, Iasi, the traditions and culture was and
is preserved.
The fate was not so friendly with Moldavia, in 1775
Bucovina became part of the Austrian Empire, in 1812 the
Basarabia region was taken over by the Russian Empire,
and for the last time in 1940, now becoming the new
Republic of Moldavia after the Soviet Union collapsed.
